A Moment of Tragic Beauty: “Running with Scissors”
By tom | July 19, 2007
I’m a sucker for Blockbuster’s used DVD isle; with their 4 for $20 special, its basically the price of renting. I’m compulsive about my stack of DVD cases, finding giddy joy in raising the stack another teir or two. Often I will buy films I’m intregied by and then they will sit on the stack for months.
Yesterday, I rediscovered last years critically-fondled Running with Scissors. Based on the personal memoirs of Augusten Burroughs (ranked #15 of the top 25 Funniest People in America * Entertainment Weekly, 2005), Scissors details the horrors of his childhood, witnessing his parents marraige rot from the inside out, and spend his developmental years growing up under the lax supervision of his mother’s shrink.

A Dose Of Reality & Hopefully Inspiration
By alex | July 19, 2007
I have had several friends who have or will be working with James Appel a missionary doctor working in Tchad, Africa he writes a blog about his mission. Here is an insert that I found that gave me hope.
I’m in way over my head and it’s all I can do to not panic. I’m not a surgeon after all and the mistakes I’ve just made prove it. Now, can I save this lady’s leg and kidney?
I had opened the belly of a woman with a large lower abdominal mass. A huge smooth lumpy, solid but not hard mass fills her entire pelvis. I identify the right ovary and tube with what appears to be a fibroma sticking out behind and a huge fibroma filling the rest of the belly.
I start to remove the uterus but it’s difficult because there’s no room to manouver to get down the side to the base. I do most of the right side and then move over to the left. That’s where I start to make mistakes because I misdiagnosed the problem.
Guess what you have to find out the rest here.

Taking a bite out of intolerance
By tom | July 17, 2007
Ever heard the phrase, “Only you can prevent forest fires?” Most
people attribute the line to Smokey the Bear and his plea for humans
to be responsible individuals, but in reality, Smokey didn’t come up
with it. How about “A mind is a terrible thing to waste,” or “Friends
don’t let friends drive drunk”? Perhaps McGruff the Dog “taking a bite
out of crime!”
I grew up with these iconic phrases and never realized that they are
all connected. They stem from the 60-year efforts of an organization
called the Ad Council.
The Ad Council is a non-profit, privately funded organization that
distributes PSA’s working with sponsors and special interest groups to
educate America on special issues. The rarely produce the ads
themselves, merely team with an advertising agency who takes over the
creative side of the campaign and delivers a shiny, golden advertising
egg.
Well, are you ready for the next hit slogan? It might go something
like: “That’s so NOT gay!”
