Tools You Can’t Live Without: Remember the Milk
By micah | July 4, 2007
This week we’re kicking off our series on tools you can’t live without. These are all Web 2.0 applications designed to make you more productive in your everyday tasks. This week we’re featuring Remember the Milk.
Remember the Milk (RTM) is basically a todo list on steroids. It has everything you would expect a todo list to have, and much much more.
Although it is considered to still be in beta testing, I haven’t come across a single bug yet. This is saying a lot, especially in today’s error-prone Javascript and CSS world.
The main features that first stuck out in my mind were:
- Multiple Lists: This is important to me in my personal life. I tend to juggle so many tasks that have nothing to do with each other. Having multiple lists is a very logical and natural way to look at the tasks I have at hand. I’m hoping that RTM will implement a system to manage subtasks. This would be great to use while working on projects with large amounts of tasks.
- Google Gears: The fact that they are using Google Gears was one of the things that initially drew me to this site. Google Gears is new technology still in beta testing that allows you to save your online data to your local hard drive. The idea is to be able to unplug from the internet and still have full access to the web application using the data on your local hard drive. I think that this will play a major role in the future of RTM and the web. I’m happy that RTM jumped on the bandwagon and implemented Google Gears into their application as soon as they did.
- Keyboard Shortcuts: In my opinion keyboard shortcuts are a must have in todays web applications. As a keyboard junkie myself, I was naturally drawn to the very fluid navigation I was able to obtain with the keyboard. I’m hoping that in the future, RTM will allow for customization of these shortcuts.
- IM Reminders: Many task management applications have the option for you to be emailed with a reminder when your task is nearly due. This is just a give in. RTM has taken it a step further and has offered Instant Message reminders using any of the major IM protocols. This is much more useful and effective for me in my work. For this, I applaud you RTM. This is the exact type of outside of the box thinking that draws me to productivity applications.
These are just some of the more than useful features that I have found in Remember the Milk. As always, don’t take my word for it. Head over to the site and check it out for yourself. It’s fast and easy to get used to. Best of all, it will keep you on top of your many tasks and save you time in the process.
